Like Microsoft Server Standard, Microsoft Windows Server Datacenter 2016 allows a computer to act as a print, web, and/or file server. It can also act as a domain controller to respond to security authentication requests like user logins, permission checking, and more. Server Datacenter can serve as the primary platform used by other server programs like Microsoft Exchange Server or Microsoft SQL Server (purchased separately). The Datacenter Edition is perfect for organizations that have large workloads and/or necessitate heavily virtualized server environments.

By purchasing Windows Server Datacenter 2016, you are also eligible to install up to two versions prior of the application at no additional cost (i.e. you can install Windows Server Datacenter 2012 or 2003). Installing previous versions will remove the per processor/per core licensing requirement seen below.
The minimum number of licenses required is 2 per physical server.
Each Server Datacenter license allows you to run an unlimited amount of servers in a virtual environment.
